    4th GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch on NGN SDPs

    “Bringing SDPs to the Future Internet and Future Generation Networks”

    We would like to announce the 4rd Workshop (Fachgespräch) on Next Generation Service Delivery Platforms & Service Overlay Networks - “Bringing SDPs to the Future Internet and Future Generation Networks” of the GI/ITG specialist group on Communications and Distributed Systems “Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme (KuVS)”.

    It is the objective of this series of workshops to support intense discussions among researchers from industry and academia in this challenging area gluing together applications and different network types. The foundation will be provided by presentations covering latest research results selected from submitted proposals and by invited talks. After three successful workshops in Berlin (Nov. 2009, Oct. 2010; organized by Fraunhofer Focus and Deutsche Telekom) and Munich (May 2010; organized by Teléfonica O2) this upcoming fourth meeting will be hosted by the University of Vienna.


    Minutes

    The 4th GI/ITG KuVS workshop (Fachgespräch) on Next Generation Service Delivery Platforms and Service Overlay Networks took place on April 1st, 2011 at the headquarters of the Telekom Austria group (Vienna, Austria). The general theme of the workshop was on ”Bringing SDPs to the Future Internet and Future Generation Networks“.
    The workshop received five high-quality, international contributions. Thus, its program was organized into three sessions (“SDP concept for future network”, “Future concepts for operators” and “IMS”). The topics of the talks were:

    • “Mobile Service Evolution und Research Trends in Future Internet” (K. Tutschku, University of Vienna, Austria)
    • “Optimization of Elastic Cloud Brokerage Mechanisms for Future Telecommunication Service Environments” (F. Schreiner, Fraunhofer FOKUS, Berlin, Germany)
    • “A Taste of Telco and Web” (J. Zeiss, FTW, Vienna, Austria) “TV-Web-Telco integration: the next convergence frontier” (E. Scotto, NSN, Munich, Germany)
    • “Service Composition over IMS: approaches and solutions” (P. Baglietto, University of Padova, Italy)

    All presentations are available for download.

    The list of presentation reflects effectively the two major on-going lines of discussion in the development SDPs. More futuristic proposals, in particular presentation 1 and 2, aim at the re-establishing an improved coordination between the transport system and the service delivery platform. However, more near-term proposals, such as presentations 3-5, investigate more seamless approaches to improve the capability and effectiveness of SDPs.

    All in all, the workshop can account as big success. It attracted 18 people with two-third of them never have been at a KUVS SDP workshop before. In addition, almost 50% of the participants where from industry, including A1TelekomAustria, T-Mobile Austria, NSN Germany, and Slovakian Telekom.

    Session 1 - SDP Concepts for Future Networks

    Mobile Service Evolution und Research Trends in Future Internet - K. Tutschku (University of Vienna, Austria)

    Mobile Internet access and usage has become surprisingly fast a commodity, witnessed by the super-fast of smartphone platforms such as Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms. Hence, numerous mobile operators on the globe have experienced huge traffic increases in their networks. Network overload and network congestion have become frequent events. Moreover, the increased popularity of Internet streaming video websites and service, such YouTube or Hulu, is expected to escalate the trend. In this talk we discuss trends for mobile service evolution and research trends for the Future Internet. In particular, we will consider an example for video content distribution in in the Internet and in mobile network and discuss what one learn from recent results from Future Internet research for this use case.

     

    Optimization of Elastic Cloud Brokerage Mechanisms for Future Telecommunication Service Environments - F. Schreiner (Fraunhofer FOKUS, Berlin, Germany)

    Cloud computing mechanisms are revolutionizing internet as well as telecommunication service provider's platforms and services. Apart from providing infrastructures, platforms and software as a service (P/I/SaaS), the most significant capability of cloud computing mechanisms relates to mechanisms for dynamic allocation and utilization of compute and storage resources on-demand, commonly termed as "elastic cloud computing". "Elasticity" allows not only to efficiently utilize internal, i.e. private resources, but also, through so called hybrid cloud computing mechanisms, to dynamically utilize external resources on-demand. This capability is especially useful for coping with "on-peak" workloads, allowing telecommunication service providers to significantly reduce usually required over-provisioning of resources. With a steadily growing number of cloud computing providers and with the proliferation of unified cloud computing interfaces, telecommunication service providers are more and more having the free choice of dynamically selecting and utilizing cloud resources from different cloud computing providers. Cloud brokerage mechanisms allow for dynamic selection and utilization of cloud computing resources based on functional (e.g. QoS, performance) as well as non-functional criteria (e.g. cost). The presented work focuses on enhanced cloud brokering mechanisms, aiming to optimize the quality of cloud-hosted telecommunication services versus the amount of utilized cloud resources.

     

    Session 2 - Future Concepts for Operators

    A Taste of Telco and Web - J. Zeiss (FTW, Vienna, Austria)

    At the moment many developers take advantage of combining information from different sources on the Internet. The aim of APSINT is to open and expose Telco typical enablers. These are identity, quality of service, billing and charging, or dependable messaging. APSINT helps communications service providers taking a share in the booming application business.

    TV-Web-Telco integration: the next convergence frontier - E. Scotto, H. Grusdt and M. Lott (NSN, Munich, Germany)

    IPTV solutions are set for a significant evolution, driven by Internet based players focusing on TV-Web convergence. At the same time, Communication Service Providers perceive the possibility to enter in the video content business promoting TV-Telco convergence. The solution fulfilling the customer needs and based on cooperative TV-Web-Telco (TWT) ecosystem will prevail on partial integrations. This work proposes an innovative architecture for TWT. The overall service can be designed and implemented with plain web technologies as web application, which ensures immediate availability for any device, as soon as the application is deployed on the web server. This solves at its root compatibility issues and avoids roll-out delays, allowing immediate monetization.

     

    Session 3 - IMS

    Service Composition over IMS: approaches and solutions - P. Baglietto, F. Ballabio, M. Maresca, and M. Stecca (University of Padova, Italy)

    Service Composition is one of the most distinctive technologies that enable the transition to the Internet of Services and to the next generation Telco Services. In this presentation we list the issues that must be addressed when developing a platform for the execution of Composite Services over IMS (e.g., Session Management, Threads, integration with IMS components like the HSS, etc.) and we propose some solutions based on the platform prototype that we developed for the execution of Event Driven Mashups. Finally we compare the proposed solutions with a commercial product provided by Ericsson (i.e., the Ericsson Composition Engine - ECE).
