We would like to announce the 3rd Workshop (Fachgespräch) of the GI/ITG specialist group on Communications and Distributed Systems - “Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme (KuVS)” colocated with ICIN 2010 and 1st FOKUS FUSECO Forum. Please kindly mark your calendars.
It is the objective of this series of workshops to support intense discussions among researchers from industry and academia in this challenging area gluing together applications and different network types. The foundation will be provided by presentations covering latest research results selected from submitted proposals and by invited talks. After two successful workshops in Berlin in November 2009 at FOKUS and in Munich in May 2010 at Telefónica o2 Germany, this upcoming third meeting will be again in Berlin, hosted by Deutsche Telekom Laboratories.
The 3rd KuVS Fachgespräch for NG SDP has been focused on SDPs for the Future Internet and was hosted at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories in Berlin. The event took place in conjunction with the Berlin Communication Week. Comprised talks and discussions about recent activities in the Future Internet context from an industry and scientific perspective have been presented. The scientific talk was split in four sessions dealing with the questions of Business Strategies and Impact on SDPs, Service-oriented Computing and Service Composition, Cross-layer SDPs and Internet of Things.

Next Generation Network based Business Strategies

The business environment of telecommunication network operators has changed radically in recent years. In this dynamic environment, the risks associated with infrastructure investments such as the introduction of Next Generation Networks (NGN) are high. In order to put return on investment calculations on a firm footing, solid business models are required. In this paper, the business web theory is used to depict past and present states of the information and communication technology (ICT) ecosystem. Based on these insights, potential future business model strategies regarding the introduction of NGNs are described.
Service Delivery Platform Design supporting Long-Tail oriented Business Models

Traditionally, Telco Service Delivery Platforms addressed the production and exposure of high-volume services exploiting Telco network based assets/services such as SMS, call control, or location. With the advent of Service Oriented Architecture and Web 2.0 technologies the reuse of services to create new services gained a lot of momentum. More and more Telco operators consider open interfaces (APIs) to their assets as well as providing operating environments to third party services as a promising business opportunity. It is generally recognized that such business models are inherently community driven and depend on successful leveraging network effects. This in turn leads to the challenge to first attract a high number of services to ones SDP and secondly to even generate revenues out of a high number of low volume services. This paper investigates the business imperatives in successfully pursuing such a business concept and the resulting technical implications for a suitable SDP.
Service Oriented Computing from the User Perspective

The last decade has attracted lot of research work in Service-Oriented Computing (SOC), giving raise to standardized architectures, protocols, and technologies that enable developers to easily expose and reuse services. However, these technologies do not fully consider the users as potential actors in the creation of services based on existing ones, as advocated in Web 2.0 paradigm. In this presentation, we first summarize SOC and its intrinsic SOA paradigm. Second, we propose a new approach based on Widgets. We propose the Widget-Oriented Architecture (WOA); a new paradigm to enable a user-centric service reuse. Third, we show how the WOA is applied in two SOA application fields, namely service composition and business process management.
Service Composition Technology for the Internet of Services and for Next Generation Telecom Services

Service Composition is one of the most distinctive technologies that enable the transition to the Internet of Services and to the next generation Telco Services.
In this paper, for each of the two domains, the authors describe the reference architectures and the reference technologies, describe how Service Composition is implemented through specific code structures and provide examples taken from the real world.
Automatic Service Composition for the Internet of Services

Next generation SOA systems promise to enable an “Internet of Services” (IoS) - an open environment, in which every participant is free to offer and consume services. It is vital for businesses to ensure process compatibility and to have the ability to quickly adapt to changes in service offering. This raises the need for new service and process description methods providing a formal foundation and well-defined semantics.
In this paper, we discuss some challenges building the IoS and sketch how automatic service composition is implemented in the Theseus/TEXO project.
New communication models for network and service control

The Internet communication protocols and environment were not designed to support the current requirements of a mobile and fully meshed society. The users’ needs and the communication businesses are hardly reflected in the Internet stack and its processes. Even the technical needs – such as mobility, Quality of Services, and security issues – have to be solved through patchwork. Based on the extended ideas from different fora, a communication model is presented, which covers technical/protocol aspects, as well as the users’ needs and business aspects in the framework of user/third party to operators and operators to operators business.
A Generic Service Overlay for Wireless Mesh Networks

Service discovery in traditional networks is realized either by broadcasting requests in the network or by a central entity that holds the necessary information of every service in the network. These techniques are applicable in wireless networks as well, however, only under certain limiting conditions. The authors present a generic overlay that caters to the special requirements of providing and discovering services in wireless mesh networks. The focus of the approach lies on maintaining scalability in large-scale dynamic networks as well as routing efficiency with regard to the communication characteristics of the underlying network.
A multi service-provider environment for IPTV – The Open IPTV Forum’s Proof-of-Concept in Singapore

In this paper the Open IPTV Forum’s (OIPF) Proof-of-Concept activities performed in Singapore from April to July 2010 will be described. Based on the OIPF Release 1 specifications ten member companies contributed to the so called NIMS IPTV Proof-of-Concept hosted by the Singaporean Government and targeting at the selection of an appropriate IPTV standard for the region. The contributing companies and research facilities provided different parts, altogether forming a managed end-to-end IPTV ecosystem. This included IPTV middleware, consumer electronics equipment, browser technology, content protection systems and interactive, browser-based applications.
Secure Widespread Identities for Federated Telecommunications (SWIFT)

The importance of Identity Management (IdM) in the Internet and enterprise networks is in general agreed and there are many solutions currently available, but most of them are fixed to the application level. The EU-Project SWIFT was started in 2008 with the focus to create an IdM architecture which spans from the network up to the application layer and build a bridge between existing solutions. The main goals of the project where support of multi-persona, user centricity, vertical integration of identities, Identity-based mobility and Identity-centric support for access control. The presentation will show the background and the main achievements of the project.
QoS aware Cross-Layer Service Delivery Platform

Through the proliferation of the Internet into various domains, new challenges for the network arise that not have been considered during the development. Therefore the term Future Internet is used to describe a network that tries to address the new challenges in an evolving or clean slate approach. Functional Composition represents an architectural clean-slate approach of the Future Internet, in which the network is decomposed in functional blocks and composed based on application level requirements in order to optimize parameters of individual connections.
We propose a general and flexible QoS aware Cross- Layer architecture consisting of a service delivery platform that composes application level services and uses services exposed by the network through requirement negotiation.
We finalize our presentation with an exemplary prototype implementation for a multimedia delivery platform.
Internet of Services meets Things - How Sensor Networks Enrich Future Internet Services

The Internet of Services has become a synonym for software exposed as services and distributed via the open Internet. The Information Technology sector is researching on novel approaches in order to enable the simple, widely use and pervasive access on services. Another domain that became more popular in time is the Internet of Things. This refers to all kind of daily devices and objects enriched with communication interface and an intelligence unit. In the research area especially wireless sensor networks have been used for experimental use. Currently these two domains are decupled silos but due to the importance of manageability, reliability and reusability an interconnection becomes very necessary. The sensed data have to be aligned and syndicated with data from the service domain in order to be able to push applications to new levels. In the following work an architecture is proposed combining both domains and using the benefits in order to achieve an enhanced user experience.
Twitter of Things

From the beginning of the Internet’s commercial usage, objects and things appeared in the Web. At first, companies and organizations provided Web sites representing themselves and their offerings in the Web. Second, with the rise of Web logs/ blogs, persons showed up in the Web and spread information about them. The next stage in this development was the establishment of connections between these objects and things in the Web. This presentation exhibits an architectural concept and system design for an “Internet of things” platform - called “Twitter of Things” - that makes physical objects of all kinds accessible via the Internet.
Data Broker for Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) is reaching common people as consumer market rises. Differ from fragmented enterprise case, there need a market for flexible data exchange. Carriers may validate their stand as the Data Broker, which leverage the existed telecom infrastructures and enable scaled data consumption. A connectivity scheme is given to meet the challenges of heterogeneity, security and flexibility, which leads to a sound business model under the new paradigm.
